Obverse: The center of the coin depicts a stylized person with the Euro symbol. Around it is an unevenly drawn circle. The country's name "NEDERLAND" is engraved on the top of the coin and "EMU 1999-2009" on the bottom. The outer ring of the coin features 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: Normal 2 euro denomination.
About the coin: The design was chosen out of a shortlist of five by members of the public across the European Union voting online. It was created by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the Minting department at the Bank of Greece. The coin was intended to convey the idea of a single currency, and Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is the last step in the long history of European trade and economic integration.
