Obverse: in the centre, the Bank of Russia emblem - a double-headed eagle with its wings folded down, and at the bottom, the semicircular inscription "БАНК РОССИИ" (Bank of Russia) and the year of issue "2005". At the top, 'ПЯТЬДЕСЯТ РУБЛЕЙ' (fifty roubles). The letters 'Au 999' on the left indicate the metal grade and purity, on the right the amount of pure metal and the mintmark.
Reverse: the reverse of the coin shows the icons of three sportsmen against a background of a stylised image of the Earth. The reverse features a runner in the centre, with the year of issue '2005' to the left of the runner, a high jumper at the top and a discus thrower at the bottom. The inscription along the edge: 'ЧЕМПИОНАТ МИРА ПО ЛЕГКОЙ АТЛЕТИКЕ ХЕЛЬСИНКИ' (World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki).
