Obverse: The obverse of the coin features an ox with its calf. At the bottom, the inscription reads “Year of the Ox”, and above the animals the Chinese character for Ox is engraved. On the left side of the coin, the letter “P” is minted, indicating the Australian mint The Perth Mint.
Reverse: The reverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, who is also the Monarch of Australia. Around the top are the words “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA”, and at the bottom it reads “1/2 oz 999 Ag 2009 50 CENTS”.
About the coin: The Perth Mint of Australia releases a coin every year dedicated to the signs of the Chinese Lunar calendar (Lunar). This calendar has been celebrated since 2600 BC, and it is still believed that the animal sign influences the personality of those born under it.
