Obverse: Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan is depicted holding a conductor's baton. The obverse bears the inscription 'HERBERT VON KARAJAN' on the left-hand side, the year of minting '2008' at the top and the year of the conductor's birth and death '1908-1989' on the bottom right-hand side.
Reverse: the number 5 is struck in the middle of the reverse, denoting the denomination of the coin. Around it are the motifs of the Austrian coat of arms. The words 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH -EURO- ' are embossed around the coin
