Obverse: features a youthful portrait of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, facing left. The surrounding inscription ALFONSO XIII POR LA G. DE DIOS translates as “Alfonso XIII by the grace of God.” At the bottom appear the date 1894 and mint marks. The portrait was engraved by Gregorio Sellán y González.
Reverse: displays the crowned coat of arms of Spain with the Pillars of Hercules, surrounded by the legend REY CONSTL. DE ESPAÑA (“Constitutional King of Spain”) and the motto PLUS ULTRA (“Further beyond”). The denomination 5 PESETAS and additional marks appear below.
About the coin: this 5 pesetas silver coin was struck from 1892 to 1894 during the reign of Alfonso XIII. Made of .900 fine silver, it contains 22.5 g of pure silver out of a total weight of 25 g. It is a classic example of the Spanish “pelucona” type, valued for its detailed heraldry, historical significance, and the early portrait of Alfonso XIII, who began his reign as a child.
