Obverse: The centre of the coin features the national coat of arms of Barbados, with a shield supported by a dolphin and a pelican. Above the shield is a helmet and an arm holding two stalks of sugar cane. Beneath the arms appears the national motto “PRIDE AND INDUSTRY”. The design is completed by the inscription “BARBADOS” and the year of issue, 1974.
Reverse: Depicts Neptune, the ancient Roman god of the sea, seated on a rock and holding his trident, a symbol of his power over the oceans. Beside him is a large marine fish upon which Neptune rests his hand. The denomination “TEN DOLLARS” appears below. The detailed mythological design reflects Barbados's close relationship with the Caribbean Sea.
About the coin: The 1974 Barbados 10 Dollars silver collector coin is dedicated to Neptune, the ancient Roman god of the sea, water and storms. In Roman mythology, Neptune ruled the oceans, and his trident represented his ability to stir or calm the waves. This imagery is especially meaningful for Barbados, a Caribbean island nation whose history, trade and culture have long been connected to the sea.
