Obverse: The center of the coin shows the main building of the University of Tartu. This building is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in Estonia. It was built by the University architect Johann Wilhelm Krause between 1804 and 1809. It is now listed in the European Heritage List as the "embodiment of university ideas in the Age of Enlightenment". To the left of the coin is the name of the state and the year of issue on the right. The name of the image "UNIVERSITY OF TARTUENSIS" and the year "1632" appear on the bottom of the figure. Above is engraved Latin inscription "RAHVUSÜLIKOOL 100" (National University 100). The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
Reverse: Regular 2€ nominal number.
Edge: The edge of the coin features the name of the country "EESTI" and another inverted inscription. They are marked with the "O" sign.
About the coin: The University of Tartu is a national university in Estonia. Tartu is also Estonia's second largest city and is often considered the intellectual center of the country. The University of Tartu is the only classical university in the country and the largest and most prestigious university in Estonia. It was founded by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in 1632. The University of Tartu, Estonia, was born together with the republic. 1918 In December, following the end of the Second World War, the German army handed over the University of Tartu to Pert Põld, the representative of the Estonian government. Estonian became the official language of the university. 1919 October 6 the school opened its doors to 351 students, including 305 Estonians. The opening meeting of the University was held in 1919 of December 1st.
