Obverse: the obverse depicts the impressive Königsstuhl chalk cliff, located in Jasmund National Park on the island of Rügen. The cliff is shown from the Baltic Sea shoreline, while the composition also features a rocky beach, a human figure and a seagull flying above the cliffs, emphasising the grandeur of this natural landmark. The inscription “MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN”, the year of issue “2024”, Germany’s country code “D” and the mint mark appear in the upper part of the design. The initials of designer Michael Otto appear below. The outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: the reverse features the standard 2 euro coin design – a map of Europe without individual national borders, symbolising European unity. The denomination “2 EURO” is shown alongside the map, while the outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
About the coin: this commemorative 2 euro coin was issued in 2024 and is dedicated to the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is the second coin in the “Bundesländer II” series, launched in 2023. Königsstuhl was chosen as its main symbol – one of the most famous natural landmarks on the island of Rügen, renowned for its white chalk cliffs and surrounding beech forests. The coin was designed by German artist Michael Otto. It was officially issued on 30 January 2024, with a total mintage of 30 million coins. The coins were struck at Germany’s five mints – Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J). The edge bears the German motto “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” – “Unity and Justice and Freedom”, together with a stylised German federal eagle.
