Obverse: The obverse of the coins reflects Bulgaria’s national identity and historical heritage. Lower-denomination coins feature the Madara Rider, one of the oldest symbols of Bulgarian statehood, carved into rock in the 8th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rider symbolizes victory, strength, authority, and historical continuity. Higher-denomination coins, including the 1 and 2 euro coins, depict Ivan Vazov, the national poet, writer, and founder of modern Bulgarian literature. The country name Bulgaria, the year of issue, and other mandatory national elements accompany the designs.
Reverse: The reverse features the standard design common to all 2 euro coins: a geographical map of Western Europe positioned on the right side of the coin, covering both the inner and outer parts. The inscription 2 EURO appears above the map, while the numeral 2 is placed against the background of the Atlantic Ocean. The outer ring contains 12 stars arranged on both sides of the map, with vertical lines visually connecting the upper and lower stars.
About the coin: Bulgarian euro coins mark the country’s historic accession to the euro area and the introduction of the common European currency. The series was designed to maintain continuity with the former lev coinage by using familiar national symbols.
Additional information:
The adoption of the euro represents a major economic and political milestone for Bulgaria, strengthening financial stability and deepening integration within the European Union. The national designs convey Bulgaria’s history, culture, and role in modern Europe.
