Obverse: The centre of the coin features Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most renowned Christian saints and the founder of the Franciscan Order. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription SAN FRANCESCO D'ASSISI 1226–2026, marking the 800th anniversary of his death. To the right appears the monogram RI of the Italian Republic, while the mint mark R is shown on the left. Saint Francis is depicted with a halo and a monastic habit, symbolising his devotion, humility and commitment to a life of poverty.
Reverse: The reverse features the standard design common to all €2 coins: a geographical map of Western Europe positioned on the right side of the coin and extending across both the inner and outer parts. The inscription 2 EURO appears above the map, while the numeral 2 is placed against the background of the Atlantic Ocean. The outer ring contains 12 stars positioned on either side of the map, with vertical lines visually connecting the upper and lower stars.
About the coin: This commemorative €2 coin marks the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. Born around 1181–1182 in Assisi, he renounced a life of wealth and embraced poverty, service and spiritual renewal. The Franciscan Order he founded spread throughout the world and continues to have a profound influence on the Catholic Church. Saint Francis is regarded as the patron saint of ecology because of his deep connection with nature and respect for all creation.
