Gold diadem with impressions of Rhodian coins, Hellenistic period, Aegean region, 3rd – 2nd century BC

285 mm.
Total weight:
4.67 g.

About the item: An authentic Hellenistic period gold diadem, dating to the 3rd–2nd century BC – an exceptional monument of the synthesis of ancient jewelry and numismatics. This unique piece, beaten from thin gold sheet metal, is decorated in the center with a stylized leaf and features impressions of the obverses and reverses of Rhodian coins at irregular intervals. In ancient Greece, such gold diadems held a deep ritual and spiritual status significance – they were used as symbols of elite power and as luxurious grave goods in the burial ceremonies of the nobility. This specimen perfectly represents the luxury aesthetics of the Hellenistic era, shaped by the conquests of Alexander the Great, and a high level of goldsmithing mastery.

Technical Information: The total length of the diadem is 28.5 cm, and the weight is 4.67 g. The item is beaten from a single piece of high-purity gold sheet metal. Two spiral eyelets are formed at both ends of the band, intended for fastening the diadem. A relief leaf motif is embossed in the central part, with fine punched dotting (punched ornament) along the entire perimeter. The diadem is attributed to the Hellenistic period and dates to the 3rd–2nd century BC. The condition is assessed as antiquarian: the item was broken in the past at the central part and later professionally and carefully reassembled and restored, maintaining its original structure and authentic metallic brilliance.

Artistic and Structural Analysis: The diadem features a symmetrical composition that widens towards the center, culminating in a stylized botanical leaf rising in the upper part. The greatest artistic and documentary uniqueness is given to this piece by the impressions of Rhodian coins at irregular intervals, among which the symbols of the island of Rhodes are clearly identified – the head of the sun god Helios on the obverse and the characteristic rose blossom on the reverse. The border of punched dots running along the entire edge of the sheet metal gives the diadem graphical rigor and structure. The plasticity of the thin gold sheet and the relief impressions create a lively play of light, emphasizing the luxury of the precious metal.
