Obverse: The set consists of eight 2002 Luxembourg euro coins ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. The national side of every denomination depicts a profile portrait of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. The coins also bear the country's name in Luxembourgish, LËTZEBUERG, the year of issue 2002 and the 12 stars of the European Union. The cent coins feature one portrait composition, while the €1 and €2 coins present the portrait in a different vertical composition.
Reverse: The reverse of the coins features the first common European design corresponding to each euro denomination. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict Europe in relation to the world, while the 10, 20 and 50 cent and €1 and €2 coins depict the European Union member states of the time. The common sides of the euro coins were designed by Luc Luycx.
About the coins: The 2002 coins are Luxembourg's first euro coins issued for circulation. Euro banknotes and coins officially entered use in Luxembourg on 1 January 2002, replacing the Luxembourg franc. The national sides were designed by Luxembourg artist Yvette Gastauer-Claire in consultation with the Grand Ducal Palace and the Luxembourg government. Grand Duke Henri, who became Luxembourg's head of state in 2000, was selected as the principal motif for all eight denominations. The 2002 set marks the first year of euro cash use in Luxembourg.
