The French Model 1831 infantry short sword features a broad, straight, double-edged blade and a form reminiscent of the Roman gladius. The brass handle has transverse grooves, while the straight crossguard terminates in rounded ends. The short sword is supplied with a leather scabbard reinforced with brass fittings.
This model was part of the equipment used by the French infantry during the 19th century. Such short swords also served as auxiliary cutting tools for soldiers’ everyday tasks in field camps.
The item shown in the photographs displays patina on the brass components, darkening of the blade surface and signs of wear. Stamps and numbering are present on the metal components.
