Obverse: the obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael David Maklouf. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and the face value “100 DOLLARS”.
Reverse: the reverse depicts the famous gold nugget “Poseidon”, discovered in Australia in 1906. Around the nugget are the inscriptions “THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET”, “1 OZ FINE GOLD” and the year of issue “1987”.
About the coin: this coin is the first release of the legendary Australian Nugget series issued by Perth Mint in 1987. Unlike later Australian Kangaroo coins, the early issues featured famous Australian gold nuggets. The “Poseidon” nugget shown on the reverse is one of the most celebrated gold discoveries in Australian history. The coin is struck from 99.99% pure gold and contains exactly one troy ounce (31.103 g) of fine gold. The 1987 issue is highly regarded by collectors as the beginning of one of the world’s most successful bullion coin series.
