Obverse: the obverse of the coin depicts the famous Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, one of Brandenburg’s best-known architectural landmarks. The composition highlights the palace façade, terraced gardens and central staircase. The year of issue “2020” appears at the top, while the letter “D”, representing Germany, the mint mark and the initials of designer Jordi Truxa appear to the left. The inscription “BRANDENBURG” is featured at the bottom. The outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: the reverse features the standard 2 euro coin design – a map of Europe symbolising the unity of European countries. The denomination “2 EURO” is shown alongside the map, while the outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
About the coin: this commemorative 2 euro coin was issued in 2020 and is dedicated to the German federal state of Brandenburg. It is the fifteenth coin in Germany’s “Bundesländer” series, launched in 2006. Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam was chosen as the main symbol. Built in the 18th century for Prussian King Frederick II the Great, it is regarded as one of the most important symbols of Prussian cultural and architectural heritage. The coin was designed by German artist Jordi Truxa. The total circulation mintage was 30 million coins, struck at Germany’s five mints – Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J). The edge bears the German motto “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” – “Unity and Justice and Freedom”.
