Obverse: The set consists of eight Greek euro coins ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins feature motifs from Greek maritime history – an Athenian trireme, a 19th-century corvette and a modern tanker. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins depict prominent figures from Greek history – Rigas Feraios, Ioannis Kapodistrias and Eleftherios Venizelos, while the 1 euro coin features a motif from an ancient Athenian tetradrachm with an owl. The special coin in the set is the 2004 commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the Athens Olympic Games. It depicts an ancient discus thrower inspired by the famous Discobolus of Myron. To the left are the inscription ATHENS 2004 and the five Olympic rings, while the outer section features the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The reverse of the coins features the common design corresponding to each euro denomination. The lower denominations depict Europe in different geographical contexts, while the 1 and 2 euro coins feature the common European map design used at the time. The outer part of the coins bears 12 stars symbolising the European Union.
About the coins: The 2004 Greek BU euro coin set is dedicated to the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games held in Athens in 2004. The set is presented in special blue thematic packaging decorated with motifs of the Olympic Games and an ancient discus thrower. A distinctive part of the set is the commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the Athens Olympic Games. It was the first commemorative €2 coin issued following the introduction of the €2 commemorative coin programme in 2004, giving the set a special place in the history of euro coin collecting.
