About the coin: The 2026 Greece 2 Euro commemorative coin marks the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi, a defining moment in Greece's struggle for independence. During 1825–1826, Ottoman forces besieged the strategically important city of Messolonghi. Exhausted by famine and relentless attacks, the city's defenders and inhabitants attempted to break through the siege on the night of 10–11 April 1826. Most were killed, but their sacrifice became a powerful symbol of Greek resistance and helped strengthen European support for Greek independence. Designed by Greek artist Georgios Stamatopoulos.
