Obverse: The center features the denomination 50 SCHILLING, surrounded by the heraldic shields of Austria’s federal provinces and the national coat of arms. Around the design runs the inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH.
Reverse: Shown within a circular frame is the Imperial Eagle on a shield, encircled by an oak wreath, with two flaming grenades above. At the bottom appears the inscription GENDARMERIE IN ÖSTERREICH along with the dates 1849–1974, marking the 125th anniversary of the Austrian Gendarmerie.

It is struck in .640 fine silver, weighs 20 g and measures 33.5 mm in diameter. The obverse was designed by Edwin Grienauer, and the reverse by Fritz Tiefenthaler.
