Obverse: The centre features the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia. The inscription “LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA” appears in a semicircle above, while the year of issue “2005” and the face value “1 LATS” are shown below.
Reverse: Features a stylised ice hockey composition consisting of two hockey players positioned in opposite directions and a puck. The inscription “RĪGA 2006” appears in the centre, while the name of the Ice Hockey World Championship is inscribed around the coin in several languages.
About the coin: The Bank of Latvia issued this commemorative silver coin to mark the 2006 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship held in Riga. Although the coin commemorates the 2006 championship, it bears the year 2005. The graphic design was created by Artis Rutks and the plaster model by Ligita Franckeviča. The coin was struck by the Berlin State Mint from .925 fine silver, weighs 31.47 g, measures 38.61 mm in diameter and has a Proof finish.
