The inscription “KARL DER GROSSE” (Charlemagne) appears above, while his lifetime dates “748–814” and the year of issue “2023” appear below. The letter “D” identifies the Munich Mint, while the initials “JG” refer to the designer Johannes Götz. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: the reverse features the standard €2 coin design – a map of Europe symbolising the unity of European countries. The denomination “2 EURO” is also shown, while the outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
About the coin: this commemorative €2 coin was issued in 2023 to mark the 1,275th anniversary of the birth of Charlemagne. Charlemagne was King of the Franks and an emperor whose reign had an enormous influence on the political and cultural development of medieval Europe. Aachen became one of the principal centres of his rule, and after his death in 814 Charlemagne was buried in Aachen Cathedral. The coin’s design symbolically combines his personal monogram with the architecture of the cathedral, highlighting his legacy and close connection with the city. The coin was struck at all five German mints – Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J).
