Obverse: The set consists of eight 2004 German circulation euro coins ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict an oak twig, recalling the motif used on earlier German pfennig coins. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins feature the Brandenburg Gate, symbolising the division of Germany and its subsequent reunification. The 1 and 2 euro coins depict the German federal eagle, a traditional symbol of national sovereignty. All coins in the set bear the D mint mark of the Munich Mint.
Reverse: The reverse of the coins features the common European design used at the time for each euro denomination. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict Europe in relation to the world, while the 10, 20 and 50 cent and 1 and 2 euro coins feature geographical motifs from the first series of common euro coin designs, representing the European Union member states of the period. The designs also feature 12 stars symbolising the European Union.
About the coins: The official 2004 German euro coin set was issued in BU quality and is presented in special collector packaging. This version was struck at the Bavarian Central Mint Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt in Munich, identified by the mint mark D. Three motifs representing German history and statehood were selected for the national sides of the euro coins: the oak twig, the Brandenburg Gate and the federal eagle. The oak twig was designed by Rolf Lederbogen, the Brandenburg Gate by Reinhard Heinsdorff, and the federal eagle by Heinz Hoyer and Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer. The 2004 coins still feature the original common-side euro designs, which were updated in 2007.
