Obverse: The obverse features a memorial portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This side also includes the country “AUSTRALIA”, the year of issue “2013”, as well as the coin’s weight, purity and face value: “1 oz 999 Ag 2013 1 DOLLAR”.
Reverse: The reverse depicts a snake coiled around a tree branch. At the bottom, the inscription reads “Year of the Snake”, and above the snake the Chinese character for Snake is engraved. The design also includes the mint mark “P” and the additional “Lion Privy” mark – a small lion symbol in a circle, which distinguishes the coin as a limited collector’s edition.
About the coin: The Perth Mint of Australia releases a coin every year dedicated to the signs of the Chinese Lunar calendar (Lunar). The Lion Privy LIMITED EDITION version is especially valued by collectors, as it features an additional collectible mark and a limited mintage. This calendar has been celebrated since 2600 BC, and it is still believed that the animal sign influences the personality of those born under it.
Years of the Snake: 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025, 2037, 2049.
